Background ChecksCurrent law requires any person, whether it be a teacher, administrator, special service staff member, teacher’s aide, custodian or cafeteria employee, who is hired by a local or regional board of education to submit to a background checks within the first 30 days of the date of employment.

The proposal was just introduced at an education committee hearing, and says in part:

“To shorten the period of time that a person hired by a board of education is required to submit to a criminal history records check from thirty days to five business days and to require the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection to conduct expedited criminal history records checks for such persons and to waive the fee for such expedited service.”

A push will soon be made to cut down how long it takes to perform criminal background checks on new school employees.
